A Six Month Peer Learning Program A RoundTable of Leaders is a small group of peer executives who meet regularly to advance their understanding and application of organizational leadership. Our goal is to cultivate effective, ethical leaders who produce better results. RoundTable members help one another by building upon the proverb that “iron sharpens iron.” You’ve probably heard of similar groups like YPO (Young Presidents Organization) or the CEO oriented TAB, (The Alternative Board) groups based in various communities around the country. Participants in these programs might join a RoundTable of Leaders because, while they are similar, there are several important distinctions. First, our groups are smaller in size (6-8) creating a more private and confidential environment that gives more personal attention to each member. Secondly, we focus on both leadership development issues as well as providing practical approaches to solving ethical and organizational dilemmas. Lastly, we use a proven methodology called inside-first™ developed by the Vail Leadership Institute. This framework advocates the integration of head and heart in leading people and organizations. How does it WORK? A local RoundTable facilitator or leadership coach brings together a small group of non-competing executives who are leaders or rising stars in their organization. While they learn and grow together, members act as trusted advisors on the challenges of being leaders. These peer learning groups jell in an introductory day and a half session that launches the on-going process. The introductory session focuses on an overview of inside-first leadership and builds the foundation for the entire program. Then, the group meets monthly for half-day gatherings to further develop their own leadership perspectives as well as deal with real world issues within their individual organizations. Approximately half of each monthly session is dedicated to various leadership principles such as purpose, vision, execution, communications, moral reasoning, planning and others. The balance of each session is spent in dialogue on the application of these principles, action arising from previous sessions and specific ethical business challenges being faced by members of the group. Periodically, subject-matter experts may be invited to speak to the group. In between each monthly meeting, the RoundTable leadership coach meets with each member individually to advance that leaders’ growth. Participants become part of an on-going Leaders Network that provides monthly leadership newsletters, conference calls with nationally recognized “thought-leaders” and access to a growing library of leadership material. What is inside-first™ LEADERSHIP? We define “inside-first” as a process that starts within, clarifying values and beliefs that differentiate our character that then emanate outward through our purpose. Inside is where we store our convictions, our integrity and our courage. From this foundation, inside-first advocates using various skillful actions to guide our responsibilities forward through relationships with others. We believe that effective, ethical leadership grows out of a healthy heart and integrates with our best rational and intellectual capabilities. The inside-first framework puts emphasis on key principles and leading practices to address leadership issues. Who should PARTICIPATE? Members of ROUNDTABLES are leaders of small to mid-sized organizations. Each group will be put together by the leadership coach ensuring the right mix of experience, gender and business type among organizations that compliment rather than compete with one another. Programs are targeted at distinct audiences, i.e., Key Executives; Non-Profit Leaders and Professional Advisors.
What are the BENEFITS? The benefits of participation will range from growth of the individual leader to the thoughtful analysis of organizational dilemmas. The benefits will accrue through peer interaction as well as from the resources made available through the program. These benefits recognize that…
Who are the leadership COACHES? Each leadership coach has been carefully selected, participates in a rigorous training program, and is ultimately certified by the Vail Leadership Institute. Vail Leadership Institute Overview. The Vail Leadership Institute was formed in 1997 for the purpose of cultivating effective, ethical leaders. As a Colorado-based non-profit learning organization, the Institute convenes emerging, developing and seasoned leaders for programs focused on inside-first™ leadership. It was created by leaders for leaders who want to put character-based leadership on the agenda. We help leaders develop the strength and conviction to integrate the head with the heart. We use dialogue to build trust that serves to encourage individuals, organizations and communities. Our programs emphasize application over theory, with a clear bias for action. We are spiritually oriented and believe that ethical leaders seek meaning and significance over success and self-aggrandizement. Our approach draws from many wisdom and faith traditions and many thought-leaders. In essence, we believe that the only way to meaningfully change behavior is to strengthen hearts. And because the future of society is profoundly affected by those in leadership positions, we are committed to encouraging empathetic, heart-centered leadership.
